February Fitness Challenges The Fort Sam Houston Central Post offers two great challenges further your efforts toward your New Years resolution. Bench Press Competition • Free Feb. 1-29 • Mon., Wed., and Fri. • 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons are invited to come out to see who can lift the most weight. There will be categories for men and women but no weight class. Each patron is to make sure a staff member verifies the weight lifted. The man and woman who lift the most weight will be awarded a prize at the end of the month. Five-Mile Cardio Challenge • Free Mon.-Fri. • 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patrons use treadmills, spin bikes, ellipticals or rowing machines to test their cardio endurance to complete this challenge. Fitness staff must record their time and distance. Prizes awarded at the end of the month to the person with the longest distance on each piece of equipment. Earn Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR & AED certification of classes. March 8-10 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is mandatory to attend every day of the course. Successful completion of a pretest is required for enrollment. The pre-test will be given the first day of class and must be passed. Cost for this course is $180 per person. This Red Cross class is for people interested in being certified as a lifeguard and for employment as a GS-2 lifeguard for the summer of 2024. Participants must be 15 or older to sign up for the course. Participants must: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles allowed. Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. Complete a timed event within 1 min 40 secs. Swim goggles are not allowed. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards Surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-lb object. Spring Break Junior School of Golf March 11-15 • Randolph Oaks Golf Course PGA Teaching Pro Charles Bishop will conduct a junior golf school during spring break. We are all familiar with "Remember the Alamo," but did you know San Antonio is home to four other historical missions? Join us as we bike along the 14-mile (roundtrip) Hike and Bike trail. We will stop at each mission (about 2.5 miles between each stop) to learn about San Antonio's unique history. Ages 8 years and older welcome. (Must know how to confidently ride a bike 14 miles.) Need a place to store your boat, trailer or RV? The JBSA-Camp Bullis Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) has vacancies with no active wait list. A limited number of spaces are available. All spaces will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis. Spaces are based on the length of the trailer, boat trailer or RV. Sizes are as follows: small is 25 feet or less; medium is 26-32 feet; and large is 33-40 feet. All five RV lots feature grass and dirt, gated and fenced in, combination padlocked and have 24-hour access. Eligible users require DOD ID, current vehicle registration (in DOD ID cardholder’s name), and valid insurance. Spaces will not be held. Call to check on current pricing for storage.
